Artist Statement
I am an artist. This has always been a certainty, like how summer naturally follows spring. It began on stage, where I loved making people feel transformed. When COVID-19 kept us apart, visual art became my new way to reach an audience.
Art, for me, is all of my senses coming together: the warm light in my kitchen, the smell of my mother’s cooking, cold terracotta underfoot. Mothers and the feeling of being watched yet alone, run through my work—from my isolation sketch chosen for a Beyond Walls mural in Lynn, Massachusetts, to my “Isolation II” installation in west Texas, to a 20-foot mural called “Community”, a work-in-progress in a medical clinic for patients who speak many languages.
I keep asking what else can art do? I am rooted in the ideology of a Renaissance person, “a man can do all things if he will.” My art reflects the multitudes of me.
